Lockheed Classroom

Lockheed Martin is investing in Broome Community College, and its own future, by helping to fund renovations of a science lab at the school.

Monday, officials cut the ribbon on the new engineering collaborative classroom. Along with the Ahearn Foundation, Lockheed gave money for new desks, computers and multi-media stations that are all mobile so that the room can be rearranged depending on the projects. That allows students to use the room for both design and construction of robots and other devices that use electronic controls.

Engineering, Science and Physics Department Chair Mike Glasgow says the commitment by Lockheed shows the students that industry is eager to have them trained. “For them to hear that this corporation is interested in them gives them a lot of motivation to go ahead with their program. To see where it’s going to eventually. And, to have that community support is invaluable.”

Lockheed Owego Manager Dan Spoor says, “So, the interest of this investment is to work with the college to establish a way to train students to be ready to fill those openings when they become available.”

Spoor says about half of the company’s corporate-wide workforce is from the Baby Boom generation and nearing retirement. He says over 350 Owego employees went to Broome.
